The Wiig Assessment of Basic Concepts (WABC) is a unique norm-referenced assess- ment that evaluates a child’s understanding and use of basic semantics concepts. The WABC can be used to: • Create focused IEPs and intervention plans. • Thoroughly assess basic concepts. • Identify children in preschool and kindergarten who need extra help with basic concepts. • Distinguish deficits in using basic concepts from deficits in understanding them. • Further distinguish an inability to understand basic concept terms from deficits in auditory processing (following directions). The WABC contains two age-level tests. Level 1—A Day at the Zoo is for preschool children ages 2-6 to 5-11 years, and Level 2—A Day at the Park is for children in kindergarten and the early elementary grades, ages 5-0 to 7-11. For a more complete picture of strengths and weaknesses, you can administer BOTH levels to children between ages 5-0 and 5-11. The WABC groups 113 basic concepts into two sets: Level 1 and Level 2. Each Level assesses concept knowledge (receptive) AND use (expressive) across seven categories: • Color or Shape • Size, Weight, or Volume • Distance, Time, or Speed • Quantity or Completeness • Location or Direction • Condition or Quality • Sensation, Emotion, or Evaluation

• Careful consideration of vocabulary —The WABC-S contains multiple word choices that allow you to use appropriate regional vocabulary from a variety of Spanish-speaking regions (Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, as well as Central and South America). • True concept understanding —The WABC-S assesses a child’s understanding of 100 basic concepts. It tests the first concept receptively (“¿Cuál de los osos es grande?” Child points to big bear) and the related/opposite concept expressively (“Este oso es grande y este oso es…” Child says “chiquito”). • Age appropriate —The WABC-S contains tests for two age levels. Nivel 1—Un Día en el Zoológico is for preschool children ages 3-0 to 5-11 years, and Nivel 2—Un Día en el Parque is for children in kindergarten and the early elementary grades, ages 5-0 to 7-11.
