BERS-3: Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale–Third Edition Michael H. Epstein • Corey D. Pierce • Matthew C. Lambert

The BERS-3 scores were normed on representative samples of students with and with- out disabilities. Averaged internal consistency reliability coefficients for its subscales ranged from .80 to .96 ( very large to nearly perfect ). The averaged coefficient for the Strengths Index ranged from .94 to .98 ( nearly perfect ). Criterion-prediction studies produced coefficients that were .99 ( nearly perfect ) for the correlations between each of the BERS-3 rating scale composites and the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale– Second Edition Strengths Index composites. The BERS-3 Online Scoring and Report System (provided as part of the BERS-3 com- plete kit) is used for entering test session results; converting raw scores into scaled scores; converting the sum of scaled scores into the BERS-3 Strength Index, percen- tile rank, and confidence intervals; comparing within form scores to identify significant differences; and obtaining a score summary and narrative report. The goals provided in the narrative report are particularly useful in the development of goals for behavior intervention plans, individualized education plans, and transition plans. COMPLETE BERS‑3 KIT INCLUDES: Examiner’s Manual with Online Scoring and Report System, 25 Teacher Rating Scales, 25 Parent Rating Scales, 25 Youth Rating Scales, and 25 Strength-Based Interview forms, all in a sturdy storage box. The Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale– Third Edition (BERS-3) is a multimodal assess- ment system that measures the behavior from three perspectives: student (Youth Rating Scale), parent (Parent Rating Scale), and teacher or other professional (Teacher Rating

Scale). The BERS-3 measures several aspects of student strengths: Interpersonal Strength, Family Involvement, Intrapersonal Strength, School Functioning, and Affective Strength. The subscales are useful in evaluating students for prereferral services, in placing students for specialized services, and in measuring the outcome of services. The BERS-3 also includes the Strength-Based Interview. This component is a supplemental assessment tool designed to gather information about student strengths from parents or other primary caregivers. Information collected in the interview can be used to develop treat- ment goals and select interventions.

DSSMED: Differential Scales of Social Maladjustment and Emotional Disturbance David J. Ehrler • Ronnie L. McGhee • Carol G. Phillips • Elizabeth A. Allen AGES: 6-0 through 17-11 The Differential Scales of Social Maladjustment and Emotional Disturbance (DSSMED) is a 46-item, norm-referenced teachers’ rating scale that can be used to identify stu- dents with socio-emotional disturbance. The DSSMED is used primarily to differentiate between students with social maladjustment and those with emotional disturbance. The DSSMED is normed on a national sample of 1,337 students and has proven reli- ability and validity. TESTING TIME: 5 to 10 minutes ADMINISTRATION: Individual Teachers, school psychologists, or other knowledgeable professionals rate the items on a 5-point Likert-like scale. Ideally, the examiner should be someone who has had

regular, daily contact with the student in a school setting for at least 4 weeks. It takes approximately 10 minutes to rate a student’s observed emotional behavior. Results of the DSSMED can be used as part of a prereferral/referral tool to identify at-risk stu- dents and to help with education programming decisions. COMPLETE DSSMED KIT INCLUDES: Examiner’s Manual, 25 Summary/Rating Forms, and 25 Scoring Overlays, all in a sturdy storage box.
