BRAIN INJURY
RIPA‑P: Ross Information Processing Assessment–Primary Deborah Ross-Swain
Using this self-contained assessment, you’ll obtain specific information about pro- cessing skill areas quickly and easily; and you will get percentile ranks and standard scores. Feel free to use all of the subtests, or use only those that are applicable to a given student. The RIPA‑P eliminates the need to use several batteries with each individual you need to test. You will find the scores valuable for developing treatment plans and goals. The RIPA‑P was standardized on 115 individuals ages 5 through 12. Reliability coef- ficients were found to be .81 or above, and more than a third of them were over .90. Validity studies show that the test discriminates between nondisabled individuals and individuals with LD or neurological problems. Item discrimination coefficients for the RIPA‑P range from .39 to .94. COMPLETE RIPA‑P KIT INCLUDES: Examiner’s Manual, 25 Record Forms, and 25 Profile/Summary Forms, all in a sturdy storage box. AGES: 5-0 through 12-11 TESTING TIME: 30 minutes ADMINISTRATION: Individual The Ross Information Processing Assessment–Primary is a valuable tool for speech pathologists in hospitals, clinics, private practice, and public schools, as well as for resource spe-
cialists and special education teachers. The RIPA‑P helps you identify and quantify information-processing-skill impairments in children ages 5 through 12 who: • have had a traumatic brain injury • have experienced other neuropathologies that affect information processing, such as seizure disorders and anoxia • exhibit learning disabilities or weaknesses that interfere with learning acquisition or educational achievement The RIPA‑P is unique in that its norms include children who have learning disabilities, and its eight subtests allow you to assess a wide range of information-processing skills, all in a single battery. SCCAN: Scales of Cognitive and Communicative Ability for Neurorehabilitation Lisa Milman • Audrey Holland AGES: 18 to 95 years TESTING TIME: 30 to 45 minutes ADMINISTRATION: Individual The Scales of Cognitive and Communicative Ability for Neurorehabilitation (SCCAN) assesses cognitive-communicative deficits and functional ability in patients in rehabilita- tion hospitals, clinics, and skilled nursing facilities. The SCCAN is appropriate for a broad range of neurological patients, provides a measure of both impairment and functional ability, and can be administered in 30 minutes. It can be used by speech–language pathologists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, and related rehabilitation professionals. The SCCAN’s main uses are (1) to identify patients with neurocognitive and commu- nicative impairment, (2) to determine the severity of the impairment, and (3) to help establish appropriate treatment goals and draft patient-specific treatment plans. The SCCAN contents relate to daily activities that adults would be expected to perform for independent living. The SCCAN has eight scales and a total score: Oral Expression, Orientation, Memory, Speech Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Attention, and Problem Solving. STATISTICAL AND TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SCCAN The SCCAN was normed on 256 adults between the ages of 18 and 91 years from 11 states. It yields a standard score, percentile ranks, SEM s, and percentage scores. Strong evidence of content, time, and interscorer reliability is provided, as well as solid evidence of content-description, criterion-prediction, and construct-identification valid- ity. Samples were collected to evaluate the use of the SCCAN with patients with left- and right-hemisphere stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and traumatic brain injury. OTHER SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE SCCAN • Designed for a broad range of patients with language-based and non-language-based disorders • Provides basal and ceiling points to decrease examinee fatigue and increase effi- ciency of test administration • Facilitates developing recommendations, generating a treatment plan, and providing documentation often mandated by Medicare and third-party payers
